Gongo’s name means ‘crutch’ in Swahili. Following a brutal panga attack in 2016, Gongo was taken to Mbwa Wa Africa Animal Rescue. Horribly injured, local vets saved his life by amputating one of his legs. His mouth had also been badly damaged in the attack, affecting his ability to eat. Unable to bear the thought of his suffering, Phyllis Hutchison arranged to have him flown to her home in Glasgow, where her local vet operated on him at no cost to repair his jaw. Gongo made a full recovery, and has been part of the family ever since.

Gongo’s story is an important one. It highlights both the fear and reality of rabies in Tanzania, that leads to a fear of dogs and often immense suffering - for both animals and humans. The animal welfare and veterinary centre of excellence being built in Tanzania, will be named ‘The Gongo Centre’.
