At Mbwa Wa Africa's shelter in Tanzania, no two animals arrive the same way. Some have been through trauma and need time and patience to trust again. Some carry injuries or conditions that call for ongoing medical attention. Others just need a quiet, stable place to feel safe. What connects them all is simple: they need someone in their corner.

That's where sponsorship comes in. When you sponsor a resident through Four Steps to Freedom, you're funding hands-on, individualised care for a dog or cat at our partner shelter — care shaped around what that particular animal actually needs, given by people who know them.

Your support goes directly toward things like:

  • Meals suited to each animal's health and condition

  • Treatment and medication, including physiotherapy or mobility aids where needed

  • Ongoing veterinary checkups and round-the-clock emergency care

  • Behavioural rehabilitation and enrichment activities

  • Daily hands-on care — a carer who cleans, grooms, and simply spends time with them

In return, you'll get to follow your sponsored animal's journey: a certificate with their photo, two written updates each year.

Every animal in these pages has a story of hardship, survival and hope. Their disabilities may have changed the way they move through the world, but they have not taken away their ability to enjoy life, form friendships and give love. These are their stories, told with the warmth, humour and honesty that make each one of them so special.

Sponsor FAQ

  • There's no separate "sponsorship fund" — your gift goes straight into the day-to-day running of the shelter: feeding, treating, and looking after every animal in our care in Arusha. Sponsoring a specific dog or cat means you're backing their care directly, but because our animals are cared for as a community, your support also helps the ones waiting for a sponsor of their own.

  • You'll get a certificate with your sponsored animal's photo and story, plus regular updates on how they're doing — including a video around the holidays. We also send the occasional surprise update, just because.

  • If your travels bring you through Arusha, we'd love to have you visit the shelter and meet your sponsored dog in person. Get in touch and we'll help arrange it.

  • Our team is always happy to help — whether you want to update your details, check in on your dog, or ask anything else.
